First under Col. Richard Richardson (his father). 1776, Captain in SC 6th Regiment. Promoted to Major in 1779. Transferred to the SC 2nd Regiment in Feb. 1780. POW at the Fall of Charleston, paroled after contracting Smallpox at POW camp at Haddrell's Point. Exchanged, and joined Marion's Brigade in October of 1780, elected to Colonel of the Berkeley County Regiment.
